A New Web Branch is Coming...

We have been hard at work for many months designing and building a new Web Branch. We are taking all the member feedback we have received and all the latest techniques and technologies to bring you the best Web Branch ever.

The new Web Branch will bring together the current desktop experience with our mobile experience to bring you one Web Branch. The new Web Branch will work equally well on desktop/laptop computers, tablets and mobile devices. No matter how you choose to access Web Branch, all the features and functionality will be provided to you in the best way for your device.

The new Web Branch features fresh colors and contemporary design elements. The navigation is simplified and we have reduced the clutter to bring the information you need front and center.

Stay tuned here for more details over the next month or two as we get closer to our member launch. We will also have details for how you can get early access to the new Web Branch if you'd like to have a chance to try it sooner and provide us with feedback.

We are extremely excited about the new Web Branch experience. It will be a big change and will be a platform for us to build on for many years to come.

    1. I too find this application and the overall technical and functional support for all of UWCU capabilities to be outstanding. I rarely get challenged for verification and my family connects from 4 different personal devices (Android phone, I-pad, I-phone and multiple PC's) and 2 different work devices with no problems. I frequently cite your security functionality to my technical staff at work as a "best practice" in dealing with security and appropriate challenges. I love the technology. Please keep up the good work.

    1. I would love to know more detail behind this comment. We haven't done a significant upgrade to Web Branch since 2007. We have added features and functionality over the last seven years. That's part of why we need to update it--the design does not take into account the new features.

If there are things that are causing road blocks, I'd like to make sure we are taking those things into account.

      Delete
    2. By road blocks, do you mean your financial institution keeping your money as safe as they are able?

I am very appreciative of the security protocols that UWCU has in place and would rather have to verify my identity than log in to an empty bank account.

    3. I have experienced this poster's frustration on more than one occasion and have already switched most of my financial business away from UWCU. The difficulty is not the security features but what appears to be the management/web design team's compulsion to include every possible cutesy-poo feature imaginable and to accommodate every possible mobile device, rather than valuing basic qualities like "user-friendly" and member freedom of choice.
Case in point: when you reconfigured the checking display a few years ago you added a "category" feature which is not useful and is not accurate, yet it's a space hog on the monitor and there's no opt-out possible. I hate this. This feature characterizes my ACH transfers to a different credit union as "mortgage/rent," which they definitely are not. And yet, there is no viable "find" feature for the list of checking transactions, to locate any specific draft or transfer that I need to track. So I have to try to find it in my separate manual record, as your system cannot be relied on for this help. No idea why you insisted on imposing this clunky and useless feature on all of us. If some members want it, why not let them opt in?
Eric, as you proceed with this new website's design, please hold on to this thought: USER-FRIENDLY. What good are bells and whistles if I can't get my basic financial business accomplished without trying to claw through clutter.
Thank you for your time and attention. Signed: a long-time member of UWCU who now also uses more than one other institution to meet my financial needs.

    4. Our primary goal in the redesign is to make Web Branch more user friendly. We have focused on simplicity and clear menu choices. The current Web Branch has become very cluttered and the redesign will clean things up. I hope you'll find it to your liking.

    5. I have to say I find the category feature to be wonderful! It is a user friendly feature if you take the time to read the blurbs about the options. I have been able to set up specific charges that appear to automatically code themselves, for example as my husbands work. Yes I have had random items like ACH mis-code but that is easily remedied by manually changing it and generally going forward web branch chooses the correct category. It sounds to me like people are just not wanting to take the time to look at all of the possibilities web banking has to offer. I am from the tech age so electronic banking has pretty much been all I have known. Maybe there-in lies the frustration. I have been a UWCU member for the past 8 years and have been very pleased with all of my financial dealings. I was annoyed when the security change occurred but I appreciate the institutions continuous improvement to protecting my finances and identity.

    6. Thanks to Eric and your team for committing to a user-friendly, clean, and clutter-free design with a focus on simplicity and clear menu choices! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
For the responding poster who finds the "category" feature useful, great! Personally I have other ways to keep track of tax-relevant expenditures and thus no need for this at UWCU, so the idea of having to fiddle for hours re-coding and reconfiguring it is a real turnoff. Why not make this kind of feature optional for members who actually want it, as has been done with some of the features, such as the automatic payout? Is there really a need to impose every specialized tool on all users of the website?

    7. Everyone just needs something to complain about. Always. Can't please everyone. UWCU, know that you are a great financial institution. I have been with other banks and got serviced charged for just having a checking account. Also, your mobile deposits and the fact that I am able to do everything online is amazing. I haven't had to go into a branch in months, and with my busy schedule, that has made my life very easy!! So thank you for continuing to make your mobile app/website better, I appreciate it a lot!!

    8. Totally agree. After helping my son with his new accounts and seeing what yo offered I opened my new business accounts with UWCU. It is amazing what I can do without ever having to take the time to visit my branch. I miss you though. Only thing missing is being able to withdraw cash on-line. :)

  3. I don't normally follow any posts, but I saw this and clicked. I don't know what the complaint above is about. I've used 5 different bank's online branch systems and this is far and away the easiest and best to use. Please keep up the great work.

    1. I completely agree. I love UWCU. Great web branch, great service, everything is so easy compared to my experience with other banks. Wouldn't go anywhere else. I'm a big fan!

    2. I couldn't agree more. No other bank or web branch served me better or even came close to UWCU's service since 2001. Great University, great city, great bank!!

  4. probably the verify u. really annoying though it's getting to be common, I could swear I'm being asked to verify on the same devices over and over again - and I can' tbank until the kids are asleep, so the last thing I want is the phone ringing.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Getting challenged over and over on the same devices is not normal behavior. We've noticed a few members accidentally using private browsing on mobile devices. That will cause you to be challenged every time.

If that isn't the issue, please contact us and we would be happy to look into what might be happening.

I would also recommend using the VerifyU Key as an delivery method for your code. It is a simple card you print out and can keep in your wallet or next to your computer. No need to ring the phone and it works anywhere.

VerifyU is a necessity on today's Internet. Just see the recent news about 1.2 billion passwords being stolen to understand how critical another layer of protection is for your online financial accounts.

    2. Just to provide another take, as a web branch user I was happy to find that UWCU was doing the Verify U stuff, totally in line with the CU's efforts to protect privacy that I see when I go into a branch office as well. I don't find it annoying at all, and think the wide variety of ways to complete the verify U check makes it really easy to get through.

    3. I believe this happens when you clear your cache/history/cookies. I empty mine every so often and get prompted again after I log in. So I imagine if you have your browser set to clear your cache/history/cookies on exit then it would prompt you every time. Not sure if this is your case but if it is then just adjust the settings in your browser and you should be fine. Another theory would be some third party application is clearing it for you on exit. Hope this helps!

      Delete
    4. Yes, if you clear cookies after each session or use a private browsing mode, we have no way of "remembering" your computer for the next login. So you will be challenged every time.

  5. I also have been rather impressed with the ease of use of the site I hope some of the features I use don't go away or get hidden. (like the "thermostat" to track your progress of savings. The one thing that I was disappointed in was way the phone app was done. While I don't know the back end or how the system UWCU is set up I do know its possible to bring the account side of things to the mobile (rather then just a port of the commonly used items on the website) and not lose the PCI side of things. the way the app feels, it feels like it was done with cordova/phone gap and it shows (their are a few bugs in the app i have noticed but none can seem direct me to the right people).

I have other ideas comments but would like to get it to the right person rather then do a long post here.

Looking foreword to seeing the new changes.

    1. Thanks for the feedback! Apps are not something we have put a lot of effort into. We'd rather support an open, cross-platform experience on the Web than having to support multiple coding languages, devices and app stores.

The new Web Branch will further up the ante on the mobile Web experience by providing a complete Web Branch on mobile--something almost no banking app does. It will also provide a superior tablet experience as well as a modern and refined desktop experience.

We will come back to the app in 2015. We will bring it up to date stylistically and we hope to add features like a quick view balances without having to login as well as a "shortcut" to login to Web Branch without having to type long usernames and passwords.

Lots of great stuff coming soon. Thanks for your patience.

  8. my wife and I have 2 different member numbers and individual accounts under those numbers, but we have one jointly held account and when we add manual checks and other payments it would be nice if those manual payments showed up under both web branch accounts rather then having to manually add them twice!

    1. We agree and have this functionality on our road map. It is a pretty big change even though it seems simple on the surface. We hope to work on it in 2015.

      Delete
    2. great to hear, we also have problems with future balances since pending items stay separate dont show up on our joint account.

      Delete
    3. In addition to pending items not showing up on the second joint account holder's display, comments or category changes on completed items created by either joint account holder don't show up from the other's login account. When an account is jointly held with both parties fully responsible for charges, it makes sense that both account holder should be able to add, delete or edit any additional information on an entry and see all pending charges, including manually entered ones.

  9. I appreciate the "road blocks" put in place by the UWCU. At first I had a pang of annoyance, but then realized that my privacy and my money was being protected. I would rather have the protection than find my information or money gone.

  11. It would be nice if VerifyU wouldn't pop up unless a risky action was performed, so I don't have to bust my cell phone out and confirm a number every time I want to check my balance.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The proper behavior of VerifyU is exactly as you describe. You will always get challenged on higher risk transactions. However, logging in on a device you typically use should not lead to a challenge. If you get challenged every time, please contact us and we can help diagnose what is going on so you don't get challenged repeatedly.

  12. Just want to add my voice to the chorus of appreciation. I moved away from Madison in 2009, but have kept banking at UWCU because of the excellence of your online platform. I'm a little anxious about the upcoming changes: if it ain't broke, please don't fix it!.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We understand the feeling of not fixing what isn't broken. For more than 60% of users of Web Branch today, there are things that could be a lot better. We designed the current Web Branch before the iPhone was even introduced. So much has changed in the last 8 years, we felt it was time to update Web Branch to a more flexible design.

It is a big change, but once you get used to it, you will find it works better than the current version. We hope you'll give it a chance and we will continue to work on it after going live based on member feedback to continue to make it better.

  14. We've stayed with UWCU even after moving from Madison to the Northwoods. Main reason is how easy the online and mobile apps are to use. Hopefully the "upgrade" doesn't change that. Also, the reason we left our previous financial institution years ago was because after they did their big "upgrade" to their online banking, they added fees everywhere. Hopefully UWCU isn't going to do the same!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We do all our online banking development in house so no plans to add fees to cover costs. The update will bring us up to date with the latest web technologies and platforms. We expect our desktop, mobile and tablet experiences to be world class. This is just one way we return value to our members.

We know lots of members continue to bank with us after moving away because of our online services. We hope to continue to earn your business by making banking at a distance even better!

  15. I only bank with credit unions. UWCU is great.(except for the UWM union branch's parking hassel) I hope to be able to see an entire page all at once without having to scroll on the new Web Branch. Currently there is too much heading. I also would like to be able to click on several bill payees at once and then do the paying in one fell swoop.

  16. I fervently hope you won't introduce a "feature" that some sites have started using, where pasting into the password text box isn't allowed. I use KeePassX, a password manager that makes it easy to have different, very strong passwords for each site. It depends on pasting, because a really strong password is too hard to type routinely. I do not believe that preventing pasting does anything to improve security.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We do not have plans to disable pasting in the username/password fields. We do not see any security benefit in that either. Thanks!

  17. Can't wait to check out the update. I haven't seen a UWCU branch in over 4 years since I left Wisconsin. I've checked out other credit unions and a bank and each time their websites feel like dinosaurs, and reminds me how cutting-edge UWCU has kept things. I know it costs money but it has kept/increased my business. Every time I see another financial upgrade their website, they are always adding features you guys added years ago. Security, money management, bill pay, account options, and now a smoother layout (you're already the most modern looking site I know!) you are always ahead of the curve. Thanks!

  18. My only complaint is that the current version of mobile deposit requires me to use Firefox on my Android phone. I have nothing against it, but I normally use the Android browser, so having to switch browsers on a phone is a bit annoying. That was the only reason I had Firefox on my phone, so I deleted it as it was too much hassle and my phone has limited storage space. I just stop at the branch on my way home instead.

  19. I would love to be able to add a comment or description when I make a transfer from one account to another, rather than just put it in a category.

And I agree, your WebBranch is much easier to use than others I have encountered.

  20. You said to keep an eye out for a chance to test the update in September, and we're running out of time in September... When can we expect the chance to get it early?

  21. An easy way to transfer money electronically to any account I want as long as I have the payee's account and routing number would be something to start with. That would make paying anything much easier. I doubt that sending paper checks via mail is as safe as you believe

    1. The new Web Branch does not add new services--it is a new user interface that makes using the site better across devices and platforms. We do have improvements to person to person payments on our roadmap, but do not have a known date at this time.

      Delete
  22. I am very concerned about the plan to have one interface for both desktop and mobile. PCs are not cell phones, and they are much more capable. Please do not remove features from the desktop interface just to have one common interface.

Some of the "minor features" that I use regularly are:

    * Edit the memo field of a web pay (e.g. to add an invoice number). However this could be improved, so I could add the memo when I enter the payment, not after when I have to click "Edit" to add the memo.
    * Hide an account, and having the total available balance NOT reflect the hidden account.
    * Viewing the upcoming payments/transfers in the calendar widget.
    * Categories with reports, though the reporting system could be improved.
    * Click the link to the credit report agency (I like not having to remember another URL).
    * Show details of loan accounts.

As a developer, I understand that software frameworks sometimes need to change, but please do not sacrifice the desktop features to the extent that is possible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There isn't once interface. There are 5-6 different interfaces within one unified code-base that respond to work best given your screen size and input type (touch versus mouse/keyboard). I believe all the features you mention are included in all experiences.

Our goal was not to put mobile on everything. It was to create "one" version of Web Branch that works equally well on all devices. Mobile users will benefit from having the full experience now available to them. Tablet users will benefit from having a properly sized touch site. And desktop users will benefit from having a fast and easy to navigate version of Web Branch that utilizes the full size of the screen.

I invite you to try the new Web Branch and let us know if you don't think this is true. Thanks!

    2. I just tried the new Web Branch, and I don't see a way to hide an account on the Account Summary page. Is that possible?

Also, I don't really like the Dashboard as my first page -- I prefer to come into the Account Summary page upon login. Is that possible?

      Thanks,
      Patrick

      Delete
    3. Hiding accounts was not a widely used feature. We will considering adding it back in as we gather more feedback.

The dashboard is very much version 1.0. It will continue to become more useful and customizable over time. I also invite you to take some time with it before you make a final judgement.

  23. Hi Eric,

Thank you for clarifying -- I took the following statement to mean one interface.

"The new Web Branch will bring together the current desktop experience with our mobile experience to bring you one Web Branch."

Thanks for all your hard work -- I'm very happy with UW, and a big part of that is the excellent web interface you have always had. I will definitely give the new web branch a try.
